The Original 3rd
Glasgow Company, the Boys Brigade was
formed on 30th March 1885 and was latterly
attached to Battlefield
East Church of Scotland from the 12th
November 1901.
Due to lack of members, the Company ceased to
function on 31st August 1997, just
short of its Centenary (8th November
2001).
Perhaps the pinnacle of band work in the 3rd
Glasgow in the period 1975 to 1994 was reached
when they appeared in the National Finals of the
British Youth Band Championships at Wembley
Arena on the 9th November 1987. They
were acclaimed as British Youth Band Champions,
the first and only time this title has been out
of England. They almost repeated this success in
1988 but on count back were placed second behind
the Bristol Unicorns. Their thirteen-minute
"Swan Lake" programme was widely acclaimed
Although no longer functioning, the 3rd
Glasgow had an active ex-members association,
which has been in continuous operation since
1934. Currently they have a mailing list of well
over 100.

July 2008, Bandmaster of 3rd Glasgow,
Mr.Barrington R. Barr Really nice and quite emotional to see
3rd Glasgow Championship Band on
GlescaPals. My name is Barry Barr and I had
the honour of being the Bandmaster of 3rd
Glasgow during this successful period
which spanned over 10 years.
The youngsters certainly
worked very hard and the discipline had to be
100% to achieve the standards we had set
ourselves. We felt we were getting these great
results not just for 3rd Glasgow, but also for
our great city where the Boys' Brigade was
born. We also had a massive support down South
in England where most of our competition work
was undertaken !
I tried to get this
performance shown on both BBC and STV but I
did not even get a reply from them. They only
seem to be interested in showing the bad side
of youth and no real interest in the positive
side. The 3rd Glasgow are now
unfortunately defunct but we have some great
memories.
Barrington R. Barr
Barry, I am
delighted you are pleased I have the 3rd
Glasgow mentioned on my GlescaPals website

contact me. I stumbled across the 3rd
Glasgow video and what a performance
Barry my hearty thanks and congratulations
for all you achieved with this Boys'
Brigade Band. Regards, Webmaister .
Guestbook, Feb.2009,
Adrian, Tongue, Nottingham. Loved your video of the
3rd Glasgow BB they were the best band ever
even when they had their splits. At the 1987
championships I was just behind the field
commander it was an awesome show and the Swan
Lake the year after. I am now a Company
Captain in Nottingham.

Incredible stuff, to think that that standard
was reached by a bunch of teenagers from
Glasgow, and the guy in charge looks quite
young as well, Neil
