Lodger Geordie Dunn
with my Grandfather Michael Martin
|
The Lodger.
The story about the lodger is My Granmother died leaving my Granda a
widower with 5 children.
He then met this widow who also had 5 children and got married and so
between them they had 10 kids and lived in a two room and kitchen on the
Gallowgate. They also had the lodger Geordie who had a room to himself all
in all there was potentially 12 of the family stuck in a room and kitchen.
My Grandfathers second wife died and as the older members of the family
went off to war or went their own ways. My aunt lost her husband in the
war in she came with her daughter, who never saw her father back to the
family home. So at this time there was about 5 of the family left
including the grandaughter and the lodger still had his room throughout
this period. So to cap this all off my Grandad took in two other lodgers a
man and wife who slept in the recess bed in the living room. Unbelievable.
I think the photo was taken about 1955 in the local pub.
