Charlie
Black-'Mr.217':- 26 Nov.27-15
Oct.2019
Charlie
Black passed away
peacefully last night, he battled fiercely
but at the end was
completely accepting of it. To his family
and friends he was the most
gentle, loving and kind hearted man.
His wife Betty, family,
Flemington-Hallside Church and his beloved
Boys Brigade were the centre
of his long, happy and eventful life.

Charlie Black a legend in
the Boys' Brigade and an example to us all
...... 'Sure & Stedfast'
|
Charlie was
born in Halfway,
Cambuslang on 26th
Nov.1927 and attended Gateside School,
he learned
the trade of a joiner and laterly spent the last
20 years of his
working life as a chrome plater in the Hoover.
Flemington-Hallside
Church
The church has played a major part in his life.
He was christened on
1st Jan.1928, joined the Boys' Brigade in 1936, was
married to Betty in 1953, became an elder on the 26th Apr.1962,
and Captain of his beloved company in session 1963/64. Charlie
was a mason and a member of local Cambuslang Lodge, Lodge Buchanan No.1499
I said to
Charlie the
Boys' Brigade had obviously been a big part of
his life, his reply was :-
"Oh aye, it has BEEN my life!"
When
he joined the 217th Boys Brigade Company as an
eight year old in 1936
little did he know then he would still be an
active member all these
years later! Yes, in 2016 Charlie
celebrates 80 years as a
member,
from recruit, Private, Lance-Corporal, Corporal,
Sergeant,
Staff-sergeant, Warrant Officer, Lieutenant,
Captain & Hon-Captain!
He still has his original pillbox hat.
Charlie Black fondly known as "Mr.217"
Charlie has shared some newspaper cuttings,
programmes and photos with
me which I am delighted to show ......
|
He
loved
the annual summer camps and fondly remembers
St.Andrew's, Bangor,
Port Rush, Jersey to name but a few!
Some summer camp
photos
below: If anyone can add info, let me know.

Charlie learned to play
the drums in the company and in his time
the Bugle Band won the
Glasgow and Scottish championships.
He went on to teach boys the drums and
still does ............... |

You will see the Boys' Brigade were way ahead of
their time...... See rule 2. Smoking amongst boys
of

The
old b & w photographs were mostly very small 8 to 10
cm
(3 to 4 inches) but with new scanning technology
I was delighted to produce electronic photos of
exceptional quality and size.... Will.McArthur,
