photo from Robert Russell, member of Flemington-Hallside Church.

In the second row No.7, with the big smile, is Edgar Ramage, next to him, No.8, is Robert Russell.

June 2009. This fabulous photo was taken in 1954 at a BB camp.
I have been told the picture was taken outside
Crail Church which is situated in the picturesque coastal Royal Burgh of Crail in the East Neuk of Fife.

Dec.2012.  Tommy Morris said "
By the way the camp was at Millport in 1954 and not Crail."

Feb 2011, email from Donald Smeaton
Dear Sir ,In reply to our emails last year I have managed to put some names to faces on the photograph,
Three or four of them emigrated to Canada in the early sixties! Also about ten of us were in the Bugle Band at that time.
The revised list of the" Company " are as follows -

Back row  No3 Tommy Morris. No4 Alex Davidson No5 Walter Chalmers.
4th row  No1 Ian Ingles. No2 Donald Smeaton. No3 Robert Finlayson. No5 John Fleming,  No6 John Fleming.(Cousins) No7 John Blakey.
3rd row  No8 Hugh Simpson
2nd row  No3 Ian Ray No7 Edgar Ramage No8 Robert Russell.
1st row  No3 George Henderson Lt ( went on to be Captain) No4 Captain, was new cant remember his name!

I hope this information adds to the photograph. Also about four young men in the back two rows emigrated to Canada in the early sixty's
Yours Faithfully, Donald Smeaton.

Footnote :
Donald passed away February 2012 from asbestos in the lungs having worked with it in the 1970's.

April 2016, email from Fabiano Smeaton, age 19yrs, Glasgow.
Hi there I have seen that my grandpa had commented back in 2011 in the GlescaPals. A photo was taken in 1954. He was in the 217th Boys Brigade, Glasgow, Flemington, Cambuslang. I was wondering if you have any photos of him and if you could ask the other men who commented on the 1954 photo to see if they have pictures too.   I'm Donald's grandson.

Jan.2012, Webmaister

I met Ian Inglis (4th row no.1) in Cambuslang Parish church on Sunday and he was telling me how delighted he was to have seen this old photograph, which stirred fond memories

Jan.2012, email from Jim Semple, Toronto, Canada

I was astonished to find a photograph of the 217th BB CAMP

Please add my name Jim Semple---back row 2nd from the left and if I may suggest a correction, the young fella at extreme right back row, #5 in your chart is Jim Cunningham. I should know he was my best Buddy!
The Captain was a gentleman called Marshall, front row centre, and in addition I was one who emigrated to Canada in June 1955.
My compliments to GlescaPals website & Robert Russell in evoking such wonderful memories. "These were the days my Friends"

Kind Regards, Jim Semple

May.2012, email from William Lennie, Glasgow

July.2012, email from Donald Marshall, Spain
I was surfing the net from my home in Spain when I was surprised and delighted to find a photograph of the 217th Boys Brigade at their camp in Crail.  My father was the Captain at that time and I have very fond memories of the various camps I attended not least Millport and St Andrews.   The company at that time had a very good bugle band, I remember the drummers preparing their drums before a competition, this in our house which was a small room and kitchen in Church Street, Cambuslang.

Our Family moved to East Kilbride as did many others from the Cambuslang/Flemington/Halfway area. My dad kept a keen interest in the Boys Brigade through the 4th East Kilbride Company where I was a member of the Lifeboys section and eventually becoming an officer in the senior section.  Happy memories.

My Dad died in 2007, however my mother still lives in East Kilbride, she will be thrilled when I show her this picture.
Thanks for your time and effort, all the best.

Dec.2012, email from Tommy Morris, Williston, Vermont, USA

Hello Webmaister, I've been trying unsuccessfully to find Donald Smeaton and Ian Inglis email address, Donald posted comments on the 217 BB picture

Also would like to add names to the 217th BB picture, and I have an additional picture taken at the same camp when the company were parading to church on Sunday morning.

By the way the camp was at Millport in 1954 and not Crail.  Hope this email gets to you ok, Yours Aye, Tommy Morris

The BB group picture was taken in Millport 1954 on the front steps of a vacated church where we had set up our sleeping bags at
an indoor campsite ....minus the tents.   There were bats in the belfry and a huge pipe organ was still in place.

I have some names to be added to the picture.   Back row # 1... no hat ~ Alex Rennie,

4th row...# 4 no hat ~ Archie Robinson, # 6 ~ John Fleming,  # 8 ~ Walter Chalmers.

3rd row....# 2 ~ Willie Chapman, # 4 ~ Jim Hughes, # 5 ~ Andy George,

Front...# 1 ~ Tom Hogg, # 2 ~ Ian Ballantyne, # 4 ~ Capt.Tom Marshall,  # 5 ~ Willie McLean, # 6 ~ Binks McMahon, # 7 ~ Bunny Nimmo.

SUNDAY PARADE AT MILLPORT 1954

What a fabulous photo sent to me by Tommy Morris now living in USA.
Tommy was born in Cambuslang, started school in 1943 at Busheyhill then graduated to Gateside School.
Left school and entered an apprenticeship with  Redpath Brown, Westburn in their drawing office.  He was a member of the 58th Boy Scout troop at Kirkhill Church and also the 217th BB in Flemington Church.
After completing his apprenticeship he emigrated to Canada.
He married an American and now lives in the green mountain state of Vermont, USA.

Jan.2012, email from Jim Semple, Toronto, Canada
Well done Webmaister. The photo is nearly complete. I remember that day vividly because out of sight of the camera two lovely girl guides from Belfast were waiting for Cunningham and I to take them to pictures and fish and chips.!!  A guid New Year to You and Yours
