Rumford
Street is
named after Sir Benjamin Thomson, Count Rumford, 1753-1814, the Anglo-
American physicist. Rumford was an active inventor, developing
improvements for chimneys and fireplaces and inventing the double
boiler, a kitchen range, and a drip coffeepot. He was also responsible
for bringing James Watt’s steam engine into widespread use.
